Many of the central dishes of both Cretan and all Greek food are vegetables and there is a variety in the style of the cuisine - epitomised by the meze - lots of little plates of various flavours all passed around the table. Packed with over 600 recipes written by none other than chef aficionado, Vefa Alexiadou, there’s everything from simple breakfast breads and dips such as Tzatziki to extravagant meals packed with seasonal produce like the Chicken with Pickled Lemon and Stuffed Zucchini. Expect baked eggs, filo parcels of spicy lamb, meatballs with ouzo, and plenty of fresh, vibrant salads. does not specify from whom she believes the recipes were plagiarized, which is a bit of a cheap shot, and how a dish is "supposed" to taste is often pretty subjective.

It is considered one of the healthiest cuisines in the world and often associated with the Mediterranean Diet. While the recipes in Aegean are utterly delicious in their own right, the thing that truly sets this collection apart from others is the clear love that the author has for their own recipes and culture. The desserts are also not to be missed - the Crispy Filo Custard and Cretan Mangoes are the epitome of summer and slightly too easy to eat. I have often used thus book as an encyclopedia of sorts after a meal at my bf's mother's home, looking up what we ate, how it is made and how to pronounce it!

There is history ( recipes for Hippocrates wine and Aristophanes appetizers), brief lore and so many rich details, the reader truly gets a "taste" of Greek culture (without the airfare! For years the Mediterranean diet has been lauded as an incredibly healthy one, and this book exemplifies that. She has written several others after I bought this in 1994 when it came out and since then there have been dozens or maybe hundreds of Greek cookbooks published, most of them by hyphenated Greeks (Greek-American etc). With this cookbook, their goal is to give their readers approachable Mediterrenean recipes for a healthy lifestyle.
